Chapter Twenty

We returned home and over the next month or so, settled into a predictable work routine. After a long, productive day in the office, I stretched out on the sofa in my study and napped while Skyla cooked dinner. A couple of hours later, the smell of the cajun holy trinity crept up my nostrils and woke me. Thank God I had a woman who could cook. The last woman I dated before Skyla reentered my life was a joke in the kitchen. Just had a fat ass with marshmallows for brains, so that didn’t last long.

I got up and went into the kitchen and slid on one of the stools without her noticing. I loved to watch her cook ’cause it was like a production with music and everything. She would sing while bouncing over to cabinets collecting ingredients. Then slide over to the stove preparing stuff while doing old school dances like the Wop. Sometimes, she tried to pull me into the mix, but I preferred to watch as it was always entertaining. And this night was no different.

Finally on one of her New Edition-type twirls, she spotted me.

“Oh, hey,”

“Hey. Smells good. What’s are we having?”

“Cajun red beans and rice with smoked sausage.”

Now my head was over a pot, taking in the full aroma. I grabbed a spoon and sampled her creation.

“Mmmm! This is really good!”

“Thanks, baby.”

Before returning to my stool, I noticed the wine rack was completely out of Merlot.

“Love, I’m gonna run to the store right quick. You need anything?”

She had opened a jar of pickled beets and was chumping on them like they were flaming hot Cheetos or something. I’d never seen her do that and thought it a bit strange. In fact, I didn’t even know she liked beets. I, myself, hated them.

“No baby, I’m good,” she replied, mouth full of the red, round vegetable.

I put on my jacket and left. Soon after, I returned and restocked the wine rack. She was still gnawing on those beets. So, I pulled out something I’d purchased on the way back from my liquor run and placed it on the island before sitting down.

“Love, I bought you something,”

She turned around and froze, mouth stopping mid chew. Then, she slowly walked near the gift, but didn’t pick it up.

“You’re kidding right?”

“Nope.”

“Why’d you buy me that?”

“I want you to open it and use it.”

“Jonathan, I am not pregnant, baby.”

“How do you know?”

“I know my body. Wait a minute. Is this your way of telling me that I’m gaining weight?

“No, no, love.” I got up and gave her a reassuring hug. “I really think you might be with child. You’ve been pissing non-stop, eatin’ weird shit and you even threw up yesterday morning.”

“I threw up because you burned the damn eggs and I was so hungry that I ate them anyway.”

We looked at each other as if discovering something hidden.
